CONCACAF beach soccer championship

The CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship, FIFA’s World Cup Qualifying tournament for teams from North, Central America and the Caribbean, is set to occur on February 20-26, 2017 in Nassau Bahamas. The tournament will witness sixteen (16) teams competing for the two top positions in pursuance of advancing to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup stage, which will also take place in Nassau Bahamas. The games will be played at the Malcolm Park Beach Soccer Facility on East Bay Street.

"The Turks & Caicos Islands National Team, to these Championships, is a very young squad and I would fathom that it is one of the youngest squads ever to participate in these qualifiers.  The majority of the team are currently in High School or are recent High School Graduates.  With that in mind we expect that our youth and athleticism coupled with the quality in our team will serve as assets to make us a competitive team, and our expectations are that we will play at a level that will make TCI proud.” TCIFA Acting General Secretary, Oliver Smith, goes on to say, “we applaud the efforts and dedication of the coaching staff and the team and wish them the best as they travel this road flying the TCI flag very high and with honor and pride”

The TCI Men’s National Beach Soccer Team (TCI MNBST) has been preparing for the Championship since July 2016 with ongoing training sessions, as well as participating as a team in the TCIFA Men’s Beach Soccer League. With four players pursuing tertiary education abroad, and Billy Forbes in pre-season with San Antoni FC, the team has faced some challenges with preparing tactically as a unit. However, the concentration remains on technical aspects of the game as well as fitness.

In December 2016, TCI MNBST embraced a pre-tournament training opportunity, where they played matches against the Bahamas and Switzerland Beach Soccer National Teams, in Nassau. Head Coach , Christopher Bryan, said that “ The experience was extremely valuable as it allowed the team to play competitive games against top oppositions. Our players now fully understand what to expect when we especially play El Salvador and Costa Rica, and they are aware what is needed to compete at the International Beach Soccer level.” His main objective is to present a more sharpened team to this years qualifiers than that lined up for the CONCACAF Championship in El Salvador, 2015. “Our key strengths will be the speed and athletic ability of our young players. The team has an average age profile of around 19 years old. Though we lack match experience, I expect the team to improve as the tournament progresses. We have a tough opening game against El Salvador who are ranked #19 in the world but I think we may surprise them to some extent. I am looking towards our third game against Panama as being our benchmark match.”
